Cyst Removal

While there are various types of cysts that can form in the skin, the most common are epidermoid and pilar cysts. These are benign growths of follicles that present themselves as firm bumps on the skin, sometimes with a central dark pore. If squeezed, keratin can be expressed out of these central pores.

While most cysts do not cause symptoms, occasionally they can be painful or be prone to trauma. Additionally, cysts can become inflamed. A red and tender cyst often requires a procedure called incision and drainage to alleviate symptoms.

Although “popping” a cyst can make it flatter, the lining of the cyst is still left behind, and with time the sac fills back up. Therefore, surgical excision may be the only way to permanently remove a cyst.

At Virginia Square Dermatology, we are trained to remove cysts from almost any area of the skin.

What happens during a cyst removal?

During a cyst excision, the affected area is first numbed with injections of lidocaine. Your doctor will then make a small incision and use tools to separate the sac from the surrounding normal tissues. Once the sac is removed, stitches are used to close the skin back together. Depending on the location of the cyst, stitches stay in place for 7-14 days. The procedure is very effective, but there are occasions where the cyst may come back.
