Skin Growths
Being the largest organ in the body, the skin has a propensity to form various types of non-cancerous growths.
Although typically benign, these growths can cause symptoms like pain, bleeding, and itching, can get traumatized by clothing and grooming, and can be cosmetically unsightly.
Dr. Jones will be able to correctly identify the type of growth you have, and discuss treatment options with you.
What are different types of benign growths?
Many forms exist, including:
Cherry angiomas: red or purple bumps arising from the growth of vessels
Cysts: round, deep bumps arising as growths of the hair follicle
Dermatofibromas: firm papule arising from a bug bite or ingrown hair
Keloids: firm scar arising from the site of previous trauma
Lipomas: deep, softer bumps arising from the growth of fat cells
Milia: small, superficial white bumps, typically on the face
Sebaceous hyperplasias: skin-colored to orange/pink bumps caused by the overgrowth of oil glands, typically located on the face
Seborrheic keratoses: very common as we age, these can look flat or warty, and can range in tone from skin-colored to brown or black
Skin tags: skin-colored, pedunculated bumps often occurring on skin folds
What causes skin growths?
There are various causes, including genetic predisposition, age, sun-damage, and trauma.
How can skin growths be treated?
The most important step in diagnosing a benign growth is differentiating it from skin cancer. Once a diagnosis is established, treatment may include:
Liquid nitrogen (cryotherapy)
Electrodessication
Extraction
Shave removal
Surgical excision
Will my skin growth treatment be covered by insurance?
Many health insurance companies do not cover the treatment of benign skin growths, because they are often deemed “not medically necessary”. We will always discuss coverage and cost with you at your visit.
