Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic condition that affects 2% of the population and causes red, scaly, thick plaques anywhere on the skin.

The onset of psoriasis happens most often between the ages of 20-30 or 50-60.

Psoriasis can lead to anxiety and depression, and can be detrimental to one’s quality of life.

At Virginia Square Dermatology, we understand the impact that psoriasis can have on your life.

While not curable, there are many treatment options which an experienced board-certified dermatologist can help you navigate.

What causes psoriasis?

There is a strong genetic component to psoriasis, although many of those who have psoriasis do not have a family member with psoriasis. It is thought that psoriasis happens in patients with the right genetic predisposition, combined with a trigger. This trigger can be:

  • Stress

  • Infections (particularly strep throat)

  • Medications: beta-blockers, Lithium

What are different types of psoriasis?

Psoriasis can affect any part of the skin, even the scalp and nails. Common types are:

  1. Plaque psoriasis

  2. Guttate psoriasis

  3. Inverse psoriasis (affecting the skin folds, like axilla and groin)

  4. Pustular psoriasis

  5. Nail psoriasis

  6. Scalp psoriasis

What is the treatment for psoriasis?

There is no cure for psoriasis. Treatment will depend on the location of the psoriatic plaques and their extent, but will include:

  • Lifestyle modifications

  • Topical medications that include: corticosteroids, calcipotriene, tacrolimus, salicylic acid, urea, retinoids

  • Otezla

  • Phototherapy

  • Biologic medications (Humira, Stelara, Taltz, Skyrizi, among others)

  • Methotrexate
