Hair Loss (Alopecia)

Whether you are a woman or man, losing hair can be traumatic.

Alopecia means “hair loss”, and there are many types of alopecia.

During your visit, Dr. Jones will first work to determine the type of hair loss you are suffering from so that an effective treatment regimen can be started.

What causes hair loss?

There are various types of hair loss, each with different causes.

  • Androgenetic alopecia, otherwise known as male pattern or female pattern hair loss, mostly caused by genetics

  • Alopecia areata, where the immune system attacks the hair follicle

  • Telogen effluvium, usually due to pregnancy, medications, or any medical condition or event that puts stress on the body

  • Traction alopecia, caused by tight pulling on the hair

  • Frontal fibrosing alopecia: a poorly understood condition where the immune system attacks the hair in the frontal scalp, leading to scarring

  • Lichen planopilaris: another poorly understood condition where the immune system attacks the hair anywhere on the scalp, leading to scarring

  • And many others!

What is the treatment for hair loss?

Treatment will be highly dependent on the cause, but can include:

  • Topical or injectable corticosteroids to reduce inflammation

  • Topical medications including minoxidil, finasteride, dutasteride

  • Oral medications including spironolactone, minoxidil, finasteride, dutasteride, doxycycline, hydroxychloroquine

  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

  • Hair transplantation
