Sun Damage

Ultraviolet (UV) light is all around us. Even individuals who work indoors and avoid excess sun exposure can develop signs of “sun damage” over time.

Other than causing skin cancer, UV light can alter the DNA of all components of the skin, leading to the breakdown and alternation of our tissues.

At Virginia Square Dermatology, we have many ways of addressing sun damage to the skin.

What does sun damage look like?

Sun damage can present as:

  • Brown spots and hyperpigmentation

  • Broken capillaries or red spots

  • Crinkly, papery skin

  • Leathery skin texture

  • Fine, etched-in lines

  • Loose skin

How can sun damage be treated?

The most important part of treating sun damage is protecting your skin from UV light by using sunscreens, hats, and seaking shade. This will also help maintain your results after treatment, which includes:

  • Topical retinols, vitamin C, glycolic acid

  • Chemical peels

  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

  • Fraxel laser

  • Microneedling

  • Dermal fillers
